Surely by now you've heard of this Rita Ora chick... and if you have, you're probably also heard about the comparisons to singles queen Rihanna. I can't log onto twitter without seeing "Rita Ora is about to snatch the wig Rihanna found in Beyoncé's recycle bin right off of her sun-dried scalp." or "Rita Ora is the new, improved Rihanna."
Well, I got a bit annoyed by all of this, so I went and did a little research on my own to give the two a proper comparison in all relevant arenas.
The Music
Rita Ora only has two well known songs, "Hot Right Now" (which isn't even her song, she's featured) and "Party & Bullshit" which I actually did compare to Rihanna & Katy Perry. "Hot Right Now" was a really big track in the Euro market for a short time, and "Party & Bullshit" is well received by most blogs I've seen it featured on.
But based on those two songs alone, I don't really see why people are comparing the two so heavily. I think it's derived from her current success in the UK, which is actually where Rihanna has really been showing a great deal of success lately, especially with "We Found Love." It's really going to be tough to compete with Rihanna's catalog of hits.
The Voice
Rihanna's subtle rasp it what makes her voice so versatile. She could sing in just about any style or genre mixed with pop and turn it into a hit. Her voice isn't the best in the industry by any means, but the girl can carry a tune and she has an ability to make her voice blend perfectly with the music that is only rivaled by Britney Spears. Rita, on the other hand has a much more polished voice. I caught a video of her doing an acoustic version of Outkast's "Hey Ya" and that, to me, is something I couldn't even imagine Rihanna doing. I can barely deal with her acapella intros to the live performances of "We Found Love."
Again, we don't have enough material to judge wholly, but I think it's pretty safe to say Rita has a leg up on the vocals. We'll just have to see what variety she brings as the year goes by.
The Look
Rita has an insanely-hot-girl-next-door beauty that will make her the next hot light-skinned blond thing in the fashion of Beyoncé. We've seen many urban entertainers from Ameriie to Keri Hilson attempt blond and really fall flat on their backs. Rita has it on lock. She's coming out of the gate with a blond weave and dark brow which many will probably associate with her signature look. Otherwise, I think she's pretty, but nothing really special. She kinda looks like a video girl to me (and she has been for Drake, Jay-Z and Craig David). I'm sure that will change as she bursts on to the scene a-la Lana Del Ray, but for now she's just a pretty light-skinned girl with blond hair. I just happened to think that on her best day, Rihanna is one of the most stunning pop starlets in the game right now. She has an amazing shape, an flawless mug and her ever-evolving wig collection is usually, but not always, on point. We've seen Rihanna rock Vogue Magazines in several countries and she has a very unique style that recently gained her a TV show with Nicola Roberts. She doesn't look like every other girl you see walking the streets of New York. Rita Ora kinda does, though. I can see why people say they look alike.
The conclusion: it's way to early to be judging someone who has absolutely no catalog against someone who has pop and R&B in the palm of her hands and has for the past year or so. When Rita Ora drops a full album, I'll reblog this topic and we'll see how my opinion has changed. Until then, I want to know your thoughts... Hit the comment section.
well when Rihanna gets the shit beat out of her again at least she'll have someone to replace her.
ReplyDeleteWell you could argue that Rihanna is like any other girl you see on the street and Rita Ora isn't.
ReplyDeleteand i dont understand why you are going on about her being 'light-skinned' like it matters.
her skin tone isn't comparable to Rihanna or Beyonce because both of them have black parents.
Rita is Albanian, she's only Eastern European - she's basically a girl with a bit of a tan.
"and i dont understand why you are going on about her being 'light-skinned' like it matters."
ReplyDeleteAre you gonna seriously sit up here and question that Skin color doesn't play a huge part in how society views people. If her skin were coal black it would be another hurdle for her to overcome.
seriously? u can't even compare her to jessie j..
ReplyDeleteif she drop something anytime soon we can't compare her. *smh
As pessoas já começam a fazer comparações só porque são da mesma gravadora. Arsh!
ReplyDeletei blogged about this too.
ReplyDeleteI like Rihanna but im a huge huge huge Rita fan.
Recently Rihanna has changed her look in order to sabotage (in my opinion) Rita's debut. Noone would have compared them if Rihanna hadn't decided to randomly bleached her hair blonde. Rita doesn't want to be the next Rihanna. She's the first Rita.
