Brit, Bey, Justin, Etc. - Don't Expect Too Much EDM

Monday, January 14, 2013

Feel like JT's new single wasn't worth the six year wait? Then you may be in for a rude awakening when it comes to major releases this year. While there's no doubt we'll get a handful of dance singles here and there, it looks like some of pop's biggest names are looking to release more R&B inspired jams or urban club hits.

We've already gotten a taste of this treatment as Rihanna has shockingly shunned the obvious single choice of the David Guetta penned "Right Now" for the less explosive "Pour It Up" and "Stay." Destiny's Child fans were also a little caught off guard by how "Nuclear," (which Michelle Williams confirmed to be a new track on Twitter rather than a recycled b-side,) was more of an easy-listening track than the expected hard-hitting club anthem.

We also know that our King Bey has chosen to fill her album with retro inspired beats that will be reflective of Prince and other rock and soul artists. She has worked hard with Timberlake, Pharrell and The-Dream on this album and spoke with GQ about how they all had ideas about bringing back the 90s sound. Pharrell has since spoke out about Miley Cyrus having the same musical ideas as Timberlake

Following this news, I've recently had confirmation from a writer (who has chosen to remain anonymous until his own music is released) that his dance song pitches were turned down with her team stating, "We're staying away from dance this time." Now take that with a grain of salt, because the original Blackout album is considered more urban/club music than EDM.

Looks like music is once again making a major shift for the better as artists are focusing more on quality rather than hit potential.

If you had your pick, would you rather these artists all stay with what's popular now or move forward?

  1. I would like a mixture of what's popular now and moving forward past EDM music. I LOVE EDM, but honestly, it's getting a bit overplayed....everywhere. I think it'd also be a new chance for these artists to get new fans who like R&B/urban sounds instead of what's really popular at the moment.

And if people still want EDM/what's popular now, I'm sure Gaga will give us some of that this year with her ARTPOP release.

  2. I feel like the "popular" sound is popular for a reason. I understand that artists want credibility, but releasing an average R&B lead single in favour of a better, more radio-friendly pop single seems like an illogical idea.

  3. Are we speaking about the same JT that's already number one in more than 5 countries (including USA and UK) in less than 24 hours? K, bye.

  4. Thank god music needs a change. Everything on the radio all sounds the same these days and that commercial top 40 EDM isn't even real house music it's garbage. Bring back real melodies and hooks. Bring back 90's R&B and 80's hip hop sounds. Bring back 90's house music with soaring vocals like UK garage and funky rhythms. This shift is necessary for things to evolve.

    3. Agree. I was loving the dance music revival and the way EDM blew up....but it's been like 5 years and everything sounds the same now. I'm definitely ready for a change to the sound of pop.

    4. Yeah I do but along the lines of urban club music like Blackout. Like the remix of Scream & Shout ...

  5. I think Britney should do a mix between "In the Zone" style and "Blackout"... that would be genious!

  6. I think blackout was amazing and was still dance worthy. I think that I enjoyed some of the throwback 4 tracks from Beyonce and I really enjoy Rihanna's new r&b and hip hop inspired songs but I am worried that we are going to go from dance music to boring... I think we shouldnt scrap the exciting stuff. Being experimental is awesome but don't kill something good!

  7. i dunno why everyone was expecting "nuclear" to be a dance song when all the promotion prior to it's leak specified it was for a destiny's child love song compilation album--and the entire tracklist is full of destiny's child's mid-tempo love songs and ballads.

i really don't mind what sound any of them go for as long as it's reflective of them.
