Starships were meant for two things: to fly, and to be performed by Cobra Starship lead singer, Gabe Saporta.
According "Starships" songwriters Rami Yacoub and Carl Falk, the song was written for electropop-rock band Cobra Starship, who passed on the track!!
As for Minaj’ Cobrs smash "Starships," it wasn’t even written with her in mind. The hip-hop song was written for the pop-rock band Cobra Starship, who passed on the song. Minaj and her management swooped in to grab the song, and it became the first single from her second studio album, "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded." "Starships" debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard singles chart, and was certified triple platinum in the U.S. in August. The song eventually made Billboard history by spending a total of 21 consecutive weeks in the U.S. Top Ten, surpassing the Black Eyed Peas’ single "I Gotta Feeling."
I can totally hear Saporta slaying this song effortlessly. "Starships" would have been a killer track for the band who sorely needed something after "You Make Me Feel..." ended its chart run.
At the very least, "Starships" would have been a killer opening track on their album given the reference: "Starships" - Cobra Starship (obviously).
Not Nicki's label deliberately scooping up pop tracks for her, though...
I love stories like this. Like how "Umbrella" and "Telephone" were written for Britney, Whitney's "How Will I Know" was meant for Janet Jackson, "Rock Your Body" was intended for Michael Jackson - and so on, and so on...
OMG if only Britney took Umbrella. <3
ReplyDeletetoxic was meant for kylie minouge. ;D
ReplyDeletedidn't the-dream write "umbrella" for mary j. blige?
ReplyDelete"Umbrella" was written for Britney. Britney liked the track but her label turned it down since it didn't mesh with Blackout's vibe. The track was then shopped to Mary J. Blige who straight up turned down the track. Afterwards it was finally given to Rihanna.
DeleteRihanna's accent made "Umbrella" though, so the song definitely went to the right person in the end.
OMG I DON'T IMAGINE BRITNEY SINGING UMBRELLA!!!, But I would have wanted her to sing Telephone, I always wanted Gaga to make a remix of the song with her, like Rihanna's S&M with Britney but better
ReplyDeleteUmbrella got passed around a lot, if I remember correctly Taio Cruz got offered Umbrella at one point as well.
ReplyDeleteI have heard that many of Rihanna's "Good Girl Gone Bad" tracks were penned with Spears' "Orignal Doll" in my mind.
ReplyDeleteJust imagine Britney singing "Breakin' Dishes"....OMG.
