Should Britney Spears Find A New Label?

Thursday, August 9, 2012

With one more album under her lengthy contract with label RCA (who collected Spears as a result of long-time label, Jive Label Group, collapsing into them), Brit-Brit may just be looking for a new home. Interestingly enough, fans have wanted this since the extremely mishandled Blackout era and throughout the poorly promoted Circus and Femme Fatale eras.

According to reports, LA Reid, fellow X-Factor judge, began to buddy up with Britney after learning she only had one more album left with RCA and has yet to extend her contract. It would be an easy enough switch since Reid's label, Epic Records, is practically the sister label to RCA. Epic is home to Cher Lloyd, Ciara and Avril Lavigne.

Another big-wig with his sights set on Britney is her former "boss" Berry Weiss. Some have speculated that Britney has been gravitating towards Weiss because of their history and Weiss' understanding of the Britney Spears Brand. Pairing with Island Def Jam would mean joining a more impressive roster including Justin Beiber, Mariah Carey and the recently scooped Jennifer Lopez.

Surely, with Reigndeer Entertainment at her back and the looming conservatorship that leaves Britney with only a fraction of the deciding vote, chances are she'll be handed off to the highest bidder. The next two years will be very interesting for Spears fans because we see that Britney is obviously eager move on from RCA after flying through her Femme Fatale era and shelling out a bullshit remix CD to satisfy the non-studio release obligation. Either that, or she could completely retire, which is doubtful.

If I had my choice of labels, I'd like to see Britney head over to Universal, but instead of Island Def Jam, I'd hope she'd end up at Interscope. The one label who at least seems to always have their shit together. Plus, with Britney seeming to focus more on single success with her last era, I'd love to see Britney line up with a lot of the artists under the Universal umbrella, such as Lady Gaga, Eminem, Rihanna (again) and different members of Girls Aloud over in the UK. I also see Britney joining Universal because some of her long-time collaborators, like the Neptunes, are housed under Universal.

Where would you guys like to see Britney in a few years? A new label? The same label? Retired?

  1. Def would love for her to go to interscope. But tbh anything is better than freakin RCA they arent doing anything for her and i think she would be much happier elsewhere.

  2. I don't know if it's even a question of her label at this point. She has such a lackluster quality about her now, that I think she prefers doing as little as possible.

  3. Put a top star with the top record company. Interscope all the way!

  4. Honestly, anything but RCA would be helpful to any artist in the industry.

  5. Out of the two record labels I would prefer Def Jam because because of Berry Weiss and Universal has a better roster that she could possibly collaborate with. But I would love for her to be part of Interscope if I had the choice!

  6. I'd like her to go with Interscope personally. They seem to make good decisions - however I wouldn't like her to retire.. she needs to outlast Madonna.

  7. I want Britney to sign with Jay Z's label. They need a break from all of the Hip Hop and R&B and plus, everyone on that label gets a lot of promotion. Speaking of which, it would be hilarious if she joined Cash Money. lol
