I remember back in the TRL days when EVERY video was amazing! Today, you're lucky to find a clip that keeps you interested for the first 30 seconds. Here are a handful of videos that you may or may not have missed, but either way should check out right now!
Lana Del Rey - National Anthem
Probably the best video of the year, but there are tons of videos I haven't seen from this year so I could be wrong. I just doubt it. All of her videos are visually stunning, but this is the first time she's had a story line that matches up. The retelling of the Kennedy legacy could have been controversial, but it was done tastefully and touchingly. I cried.
Shel - Freckles
People may not recognize Shel, but you should know that they're upcoming, self-titled album is one of the best of the year. Something different for all of you pop-lovers. The "Freckles" clip is the cutest clip ever that tells the story of something that everyone has experience... watching someone you love put you in the friend zone and share their affection with someone else.
M.I.A. - Bad Girl
This chick always has a message, sometimes I don't even understand. This was particularly confusing for some who saw this as a hackneyed controversy target, but I find it empowering. Plus, it's a lot calmer than her "Born Free" video, where she blew up a bunch of ginger-haired youth.
Azealia Banks - Liquorice
Terrible hair aside, this video is hot. Banks is a badass, western Kill Bill style, awkwardly sexy war goddess.
Kanye West - Mercy
This video takes the came for cool effects, even though the effects are really simple. Kanye's video was normally really late for a single release, but they almost never disappoint... if you live past the seizure they will likely cause. With "Mercy," West leaves the strobelight effects alone and just has a camera pan the room, parading around like a cocky rapper Kanye West. Plus Kid Cudi's in it and he's definitely hot.
Florence & the Machine - Spectrum
Theatrical is just not the word to describe this. I'm sure Steven Spielburg watched this video and blew his load. It's Broadway meets a high-budget Hollywood mega-film a la Transformers or The Dark Knight.
Rihanna - Where Have You Been
Wait, Rihanna can dance!? No. But she did a damn good job learning the choreography and shaking it!
No judging solely based on dance skills, Rihanna has never been hotter than she is in this video and the quality of the footage is early-2000 Britney level. Amazing song! Incredible video!
Nicki Minaj - Stupid Hoe
Leave it to Nicki Minaj to make a low-budget Hype Williams video work. Barely. If not for anything, you should watch this video because it truly embodies Nicki's image, which is a crazy clusterfuck. Honestly, this video is so bad that it's awesome. You hate it, but you secretly love it

Give me all you luvin' - Madonna
ReplyDeletePrimadonna - Marina and the Diamonds
Timebomb - Kylie Minogue (nothing really special but was pretty cool)
co-sign on "give me all your luvin'" and "timebomb," both immensely entertaining and over the top with attitude.
