I almost never do this, but I really wonder if everyone understands that this summer is going to be epic on radio. The two songs I'm most interested in are "Rihanna's "Where Have You Been" which is already hit 2,000,000 audience impressions point updates on radio (a week before it's release) and Nicki Minaj's "Whip It," which she confirmed to be the next pop single via Twitter.
Which song will be bigger? Of course, it'd make sense to say "Where Have You Been," but for me "Whip It" was the stand out track on Roman Reloaded, much more so than "Starships." I am about 90% sure it will be Nicki's first #1 single.

from a non-bias point of view, "Whip It" is really different. "WHYB" sounds like a remixed track. It'll do well because it's Rihanna, but out of the two, "Whip It" is a lot more likable and unique.

With Rihanna's Where Have You Been, you have smash hit written all over it for a few reasons. It's a beastly version of We Found Love and then.....it's Rihanna. I actually prefer this over We Found Love on any day of the week. The production was simply magnificent.
Whip It..........where do I begin. When the snippets leaked, I was almost sure that Pound the Alarm would be my favorite Pop song from the album. When the album came out and I heard the songs in full, Whip It snatched that crown and still wears it until this day. I don't know what makes Whip It so great, is it the production? Is it the wordplay? Is it simply Nicki's expression itself? Honestly, I can't put my hand on it but it merges everything I want when rappers make music like this. This song had me INSTANTLY from Nicki's "Hey, you, jump in this ride" line. The way she said it just simply captivated me. Nicki did a great job with merging 2 rap verses and a catchy hook & chorus and this song definitely has hit material all over it.
Who would have thought that "Click Clack" and "Who's Your Best MC?" Nicki Minaj would be able to make such a great Pop song. I don't want to hear that she's selling out or a song like Whip It can easily be made by another female rapper because any other female rapper that has ventured into a Pop sound like Whip It or any other song of that production has pretty much failed. (Missy does a great job at the type of Pop she does so she's excluded).
With all that being said, I think Whip It will be the summer smash along with Where Have You Been. Besides the breakdowns, they are both pretty different. Nicki has a leg up though because she combines her witty raps along with the singing.

I'd LOVE to see Nicki get the hit of the summer and I think Whip It is great but I think Rihanna has such prescence on radio that Where Have You Been will be snatching wigs until November.
ReplyDeleteI think 'Where Have You Been' will dominate based on this reason: 'Whip It' is either love it or hate it. Some people don't enjoy how "loud" Nicki got with her music. I use "loud" because it's been described as obnoxious by people who dislike her new sound. The hype for 'Where Have You Been' has been existent since 'Talk That Talk' leaked. The video appears to be major slayage - guess we'll find out tomorrow. Nicki's videos, in my opinion, are worthless hot messes. The 'Starships' video was basically like watching 'Massive Attack' whilst tripping on acid. Simply my opinion, but 'Where Have You Been' gets my vote.

ReplyDelete"Whip it" is my jam too, tho! It's more recent-- & The album didn't sell crazily, so it's probably more obscure to the General public. Then again, Talk that Talk didn't sell crazily either, but I just feel like more people know WHYB. The video will Solidify my answer though. If they come through on this video, then It's a DONE DEAL! "Where Have You Been" will reign supreme. It deserves it. Nicki will still do well with whatever she puts out next. All of the other pop singles were better than "Starships".
