I've been waiting to write this review for a while. Even before we got the album, I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into the most anticipated album of Q1, 2012. Considering she's a "new artist," Lana has had unequivocal amounts of internet hype. Even with a face-plant performance on Saturday Night Live, she's shined brightly on the net and kept everyone eagerly waiting to hear her music. So how's the album? It's good! It's really fucking good!
Born To Die is full of angst. The tone is mellow, almost depressive. If I could describe Lana Del Rey and her freshman album in one sentence; "Lana Del Rey is like an Americanized Duffy who gets really high and records with Kid Cudi." Unlike Duffy, though, the tone of the music isn't so depressive that it makes you want to slit your wrists. The lyrics aren't as moody, either. The sound of the album is pretty consistent throughout, making the entire album very smooth and listenable. Even on the first listen, I didn't think there was one bad track on the album, which is rare for a primary album effort.
She's also not as boring as I initially perceived her. She's a bit stiff and distant as a person, but her music dances through your headphones and around your brain, forcing you to sway in your seat. It took me about three full listens to really enjoy everything that was coming through the speakers, but at this point, I think the album is beautiful and full deserving of all of the hype she's been receiving.
My favorite thing about this album also just so happens to be my least favorite. The albums consistency is impressive. I like that she doesn't track to change it up and throw a dance track or extremely angry break-up song in the mix. However, the lack of variety on the album would make most people want to listen to something else around the eighth song. The first few times I listened to the album, I felt like I was watching a funeral montage in a Leonardo DiCaprio movie, or attending a candlelight vigil. Still, there's something about that mood that really just seems to work well for her. I also love the massive amounts of string in this album. You don't hear a lot of non-machine/studio strings these days.
Standout tracks on the album were noticeable on first listen. "Video Games" remains my favorite. You just can't really compete with that kind of composition. Plus, in that song she seems to be most in-tune with her vocal ability than any other. Maybe it's studio magic, but that song will be just as amazing in five years as it is now. "National Anthem" would probably be a close second. I love the theme of the song, which begins with auditory fireworks and continues with popping drums throughout the song, covering a lovely choir-style chorus and Gwen Stefani-like rapping. The fan-favorite of the album seems to be "Dark Paradise," which captures Lana singing higher notes. I love that this song ends with thudding drums that speed up and slow down. Lastly, I love how gangster she seems in "Radio," asking her audience, "How do you like me now," and proclaim she's, "Like a fucking dream." The song is very much her "I am here, deal with it" record.
The question is, will this album stand the test of time? Will people still be talking about this album a year from now? Even six months? I think it's hard to say, but there are some tracks that are skip-able. I don't think it's a bad thing, but I think this album could fade of the radar easily without constant promotion. I also have a hard time seeing this album doing well on the radio, since we rarely see success from artists like her. Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks" did really well on radio for a while, but we haven't really seen anyone similar smash the charts like that since. I could see "National Anthem" or "Diet Mountain Dew" charting well, but nothing else, really. With that said, radio is one of the most important factors in keeping an album alive. Look at Adele. A year later and she's still topping charts with her album, while each and every single she releases smashes the #1 spot on the Hot 100 without any effort.
I just wonder if the world is ready for this hipster-chic pop music that's really been an underground, indie sound until now. We'll just have to wait and see. The music industry is so unpredictable these days that we could see her go diamond or not even go gold.
The Bottom Line: Born To Die is a solid first album. Solid gold. I'd spend $15 bucks on a hard copy, just for the opportunity to listen to it while I'm lounging around the house, relaxing or even gaming/blogging. I'm faithful that Lana will blow up this year and build a fan base that will help her stick around long enough to release a shitty sophomore album, as most artists like her do.
I'd slap a 7 out of 10 on this album.
I heavily recommend everyone at least download it and give it a chance.
I also think it's worth pre-ordering on iTunes. (Or, you can win a copy of it here.)
What are your thoughts? Like it, love it or hate it?
I'd give it a 9, at least.
ReplyDeleteI have to say a 9. Very impressive. I agree that the album doesn't have much variety, but that is what really makes it work. Lana knows what she wants, and that is what she gave us. Her sound. Every artist has their unique sound, and Lana's already found hers on her major debut. She isn't trying to appeal to the radio with trashy songs you hear now. Sorry, but comparing this to a song that is on the radio now, like Sexy and I Know It for example, they just don't compare.
ReplyDeletedark paradise was a skippable track imo. i favor born to die, national anthem and off to the races most. there are a few things good and/or bad. i'm not sure if she'll be able to chart well. that may not be a bad thing though. if she tours, tickets will be cheap (hopefully). she definitely has the ability to chart but i think w/ artists, like you said, adele and with nicki and madonna coming out w/ new albums i'm not sure if she'd be able to beat them out on the hot 100. we'll see though. (:
ReplyDeleteI give it 8.5/9. Normally i dont care too much about the lyrics. But these are some good lyrics i've been hearing on this album. And her voice...it is heavenly in my opinion. My current favorites are Dark Paradise, Without You, Lucky Ones( her 'fire' pronounciation is f*cking HOT!).
ReplyDeleteLoving the album. I got Kid Cudi vibes from the lyrics and moody, "foggy" production. I agree with the variety but I'm not complaining. I want a consistent, coherent album, not filler + singles + something actually good.
ReplyDeleteI haven't listened to the first 4 songs today considering I've had them for a bit. National Anthem, Carmen, This Is What Makes Us Girls are my favorites off the top of my head. I need to let it sink in and get some good headphones. These whites Apple ones aren't cutting it and my Beats broke (again).
I'm really appreciating her as a writer more than anything. She's telling stories. Radio (not her song) sucks but I hope she gets some airtime. Aside from this stuff being good, I'm ready for dance to die.
I love this album its a wonderful album to start the yr off and im in love with every track. it gives me a fresh breath of air from all that beat banging club music and is a good album to just kick back and listen to. Im definitely a fan of Lana del Rey and im going to buy the album to support her ass. ill give the album an 8
ReplyDeleteI just think 9 is a really intense score...
ReplyDeleteHmm, honestly, there's nothing wrong with the album. All the songs are fucking perfect! I just wanted more musics, like 'Kinda Outta Luck', 'Yayo', 'Driving in cars with boys' and others.
ReplyDeleteAll the lyrics and moody, and the beat are great, cause we can imagine the video, the story... it's magical.
I just loved the cd, and i hope that i can win the copy at iTunes by the blog, thanks for the chance!
And please, people! STOP talking about her fucking lips and go listen her music, then you'd know why we like her so much!
And I forgot to say the 'grade' so.. it's a very merited 9!
ReplyDeleteid give it a 8.5/10 its such a good album she obviously knows what music works with her voice and she has control over it there are some REALLY REALLY GOOD songs e.g. National Anthem, Dark Paradise + Radio i could see all 3 of these doing well theres 1-2 songs the album could have done without and i kinda of have to disagree with how theres no variety because yeah its all the same sound but the way she uses her voice makes them different its sad to think that this album could flop because she really does have an AMAZING voice and infact i think indie pop could actually become the new mainstream pop trend and i think people will start actually uses live instruments but i would recommend this to anyone ive even forced my friends to listen to Video Games and Born To Die and at first they are like "ew no" but after just one listen they are hooked ;) just like me:$ but yeah :)
ReplyDelete^That is one really long run-on sentence...
ReplyDeleteWell I have to say I absolutely love it! It's so wonderful and there's so much personality to each of the tracks, love it. Have to admit I was shocked at the radical make over Diet Mountain Dew has experienced (long gone was the modest Diet Mtn Dew). I love Lana. I do think she's unique and I'm really digging Million Dollar Man and the Lucky Ones right this instant.
ReplyDeleteI think it deserves well more than a seven, you said yourself that you cant find a real fault.
ReplyDeleteOkay, she's not everyones cup of tea - but she's not trying to be.
Deserves atleast a 9
Her music sounds like it should be in The Great Gatsby Movie Soundtrack (which is a Leonardo Dicaprio film ironically)
ReplyDeleteOkay...This album is so Epic, cinematic, and dramatic. Everything that I need when watching a movie! And I think That's what I like. I didnt think it would be possible to come out with a WHOLE album like this, but I fell in love with EVERY song on the album. ESPECIALLY "Dark Paradise" And "This Is What Makes Us Girls". Its really hard to get into the radio with an album this. Maybe if a little "Payola" was involved....then shed have a shot. People these days aren't open minded enough to accept this album for what it it, and what it CAN be! People are limited when it comes to music. To me shes a Diamond in the rough, a needle in a haystack, and a breath of fresh air!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is an album made of sadness.
10/10-Lyrics-2, Vocals-2, Production-3, Subject (Subjects she talked about on the album)-2, and Pace-1.
Okay....I just posted this ^^^^^. but i forgot to add, I honestly wasn't digging "Lolita". But seeing that technically, its not on the album, but only the deluxe version, I feel like that it was pointless to include that one. But if thats the case, Everyone is entitled to ONE bad song, and ONE bad performance for that matter!!!!
ReplyDeleteAlso, Im in LOVE with her "Julia Roberts" lips! :P
