With the depressing news that both Britney Spears (via Sony Music) and Lady Gaga (via Billboard) have officially ended their respective eras and will be releasing no more singles, I can't help but wonder... what if?
Dr. Luke promised us we'd get a bunch of singles from Femme Fatale and I'm honestly shocked that Gaga didn't release every single track from Born This way, but there are definitely some tracks from both albums that would have smashed the charts.
"Up N Down" - Seriously, this song has smash hit written all over it. Though it could stand to have been mixed a bit faster, it's catchy just to the point before it becomes annoying. This is the sexy Britney that the world expects to hear on the radio... not the nasally crybaby we got on "Criminal." I didn't really even want it on the album. She could have at least sent this to radio and released the tour performance for the video. They dropped the ball here and I'm pissed about it.
"Scheiße" - Once again, what the hell? Why was this not the 3rd or 4th single? If Missy Elliott can get to #2 on the Hot 100 by mumbling a bunch of shit (in "Work It") than so can Gaga. Plus, this beat is insane. If anything, we'd have a club smash on our hands. I think the world was completely ready for this to be a single.
"Big Fat Bass" - Though 80% of Britney fans would disagree with me, they also voted for "Criminal" to be a single so I don't really give a shit. I can't tell you how many times I was asked, "What's that song you're playing?" All of my friends (who listen to urban music) that went to Britney's concert (because tickets were like a nickel) said that this was their favorite song and performance. I can see "Big Fat Bass" being consistent with Black Eyed Peas hits and taking over radio.
"He About To Lose Me" - If Britney fans wanted a slower song to be released, it should have been this. This beat is a lot more ear-friendly and the lyrics are a bit more relateable. Honestly, this is Britney's strongest non-dance track since "Breathe On Me." Plus, she could cheapen it and throw an overly popular rapper on the remix to lock in a high spot on Billboard.
"Americano" - Yeah, call me crazy, but this song gives me a crazy feeling. I think I like the mariachi feeling it has. Plus mixing in the "Puss In Boots" promo could have got A LOT of kid buys, which is the best thing that could happen to a single. Put a song that kids like and parents approve and you've got yourself a #1, baby!
Songs that wouldn't have worked, but fans wanted:
"Inside Out" - Since this song is basically the same thing as "You Da One" by Rihanna, it's pretty much confirmed that this song would have flopped.
"Heavy Metal Lover" - What the fuck is this song about? I have no idea what she is saying. I catch every other word, like "whisky mouth" and "my blonde shelf." This song is too odd for radio.
"Gasoline" - Really? This song sounds like the radio in 2006.
What are your choices?
Big Fat Bass
ReplyDeleteit's blonde south not blond shelf lol.
ReplyDeleteagree with all you said about britney.
ReplyDeletebut IMO the FF era was perfect single and video wise (excluding some horrible shots of Britney on the IWG video).
sure at least one more single/video should have been released, I would have chosen Inside Out and Up 'n Down promo single to promote the FFT DVD definitely.
*clapping my hands like a ghetto girl to prove my point*
ReplyDeleteCOULD. NOT. AGREE. MORE.
especially w/ HATLM. there was SO much hype over both albums and both dropped the ball when it came to singles. don't get me wrong they did well w/ some but their strongest songs imo, weren't even given a shot.
Big Fat Bass could have been a number 1 same with Up N Down. It was the most bought song from FF when it came out.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Up and Down!!! Big hit for sure!!!! He about to lose me is one of my faves, although I'm not sure how much radio potential it had!
ReplyDeleteIf The One That Got Away can get a pop #1, so can HATLM.
ReplyDeletewhat i wanted from britney is Trouble For Me, DKMW, HATLM and SIWAK
ReplyDeleteand from gaga i NEEDED Heavy Metal Lover, Hair, Scheisse, Bad Kids and BJ+AF

ReplyDeleteLoved your choices for Gaga and Britney. Scheisse is an album gem I still bang to forever, the world would have loved that song, to me it had the potential to be the base of a huge dance craze; Bloody Mary is my favorite song off the album and Americano is basically one of the catchiest songs on BTW, I was completely caught off guard the first time I heard it.
ReplyDeleteUp N Down has that sense of carelessness that most people think Britney has lost and its hooks and beats are very sticky; I haven't heard Big Fat Ass enough to have an opinion on it; He About To Lose Me is a great slow track from Britney, I remember I woke up one morning feeling I had to listen to it and so I did, several times.
I actually thought Up n' Down was mixed really well...lol
ReplyDeleteUp N Down and Inside Out should have been singles, i agree.
ReplyDeleteI love all your single choices!!! But now when I listen to Gasoline I'm gonna hear that 2006 sound lol
