Get Into It: Jessie Ware

Monday, February 11, 2013

I stumbled upon this gem listening to Solange radio on Spotify. The UK had neglected to give me a follow up pop-soul singer to fill the shoes of Adele, who followed Duffy, who followed Amy Winehouse, etc. Even though I don't expect Ms. Ware to procure similar success to the aforementioned ladies, her latest EP, If You're Never Gonna Move, positions her to launch a moderately successful US career. I'm hoping she can at lease pick up the slack Marina + the Diamonds and Cher Lloyd left. Of course, she'd have to make her songs more depressing because for some reason we over in the US always get a boner for the more depressed British songbirds.

Jessie's sound is a rather risky mix of retro R&B, modern hip-hop and a sugary dance pop. Lucky for her she has those unique vocals that could sound beautiful even with a country or rock production behind her sultry vocals.

Her EP offers mostly tracks cut from her original UK release, Devotion, and a fizzing hipster anthem of a remix. She hasn't hit the point of being the talk of the underground in the US just yet, she's likely to follow in the steps of Frank Ocean or Elle Varner and rocket herself onto radio with an undeniable infectious radio hit in the next year or so. What I like about her is that she doesn't really give off the desire to rocket to desire. She has a great connection with her sound that only works with her. It will help keep her fan base growing steadily for a while.

If you have Spotify, you can check out her EP below.

Another track from the EP that I adore is "Devotion."

    1. Preach it.

Devotion is impressively cohesive and perfectly produced, one of the best debuts I've heard in years.

    2. People mistake these "Get Into It" post as an introduction to new artists. It's not. It's an attempt to introduce are mostly mainstream pop and US audience to audience that could potentially make a splash in the next couple of years.
