Ke$ha Tweets About 'Die Young' & Sandy Hook

Tuesday, December 18, 2012

By now I assume everyone knows all about the horrible incident at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. If not, in short, a crazed gunman broke into an elementary school and murdered 20 young children and six educators before police arrived.

As you can imagine a song with a title like "Die Young" may read as insensitive to some at a time like this. As a result, Ke$ha has been making huge drops on radio, almost completely disappearing one day shortly after the accident.

Now, Ke$ha is speaking out on the controversy. See what she had to say below.

Being an entertainment writer, I've had many friends ask how I felt about the situation. I have to say that I agree with radio stations choosing to remove the song or play it much less. Even though this is a true testament to the song, it'd be incredibly insensitive to argue for it to continue to be one of the biggest songs in the country.

However, I am uncomfortable with Ke$ha's last tweet. I don't know if people are blaming her for the situation, but it feels odd that she'd point that out now... especially considering Dr. Luke claims the song spiraled from one of her ideas!

"When we wrote 'Die Young', we were in the front of an ice cream parlor, and Ke$ha told me 'Ice cream could make me diabetic, and I'd die young. Luke, that's the idea! Dying young!'. The creative process of this album was really natural and undefined."

What are your thoughts on this situation?

I hope that in time all of the families effected by this horrible tragedy are able to start to rebuild their lives. My heart goes out to anyone who loses a loved one, especially a child.

People are fucking crazy.

  1. I think it's unnecessary for her or the radio stations to pull back on the track. She's not literally praising the act of dying young. Any idiot knows that it's a figure of speech.

    1. While it's a figure of speech, it's also a very sensitive combination of words. Anyone touched by this tragedy (directly or indirectly) could very easily be triggered by the repitition in the chorus alone. (I know when my father died, songs like Halo suddenly had a new meaning and could set me off.)

There's nothing wrong with a little sensitivity in the immediate days after a tragedy like this.
