Review: Rita Ora's 'Ora' Debut A Bust

Friday, August 24, 2012

After almost a year of hype and high-anticipation, the first full length release from British singer-songwriter, Rita Ora, has made it's way into the hands of fans and curious music lovers all over the net.

I immediately felt something was amiss with the release of "How We Do (Party)" in the United States. Not that it is a bad song, but as I stated many, many times, it's a complete rehash of so many Friday night drinking anthems like Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (TGIF)." Bad first single choice aside, I could have never forecast that this album would end up so heinously mishandled.

The biggest issue is how thin the LP is stretched. The roster behind putting this album together is filled with top-notch producers, Greg Kurstin, Diplo and Fraser T. Smith, and writers, James Fauntleroy, Ester Dean and Terius Nash, all of whom have worked on some of the greatest music projects this year. Logically, you would expect this album to be dynamite. Instead, it seems each producer pulled Ora in a completely different direction and failed to capture any aspect of her personality. 4 out of every 5 tracks on the album are generic trash. The songs that most top pop stars would normally leave behind in the demo stages of creating an album seemed to have made it to the final product that is Ora. Rita Ora, her label and her management all settled for an album that lacks cohesiveness and originality. It was exhausting listening to this album all the way through without skipping nearly every song after 30 seconds. If I didn't know any better, I'd assume the tracks were laid before Rita recorded her vocals and there was no further mastering after she did so. "Fall In Love," the will.i.am produced track, could have been a great opportunity for massive radio success, but her computerized vocals become incessantly annoying as she recklessly tosses in amateur ad-libs.

The album isn't a complete waste though. The album does have some great beats, including "Fall In Love." The stand out track on the album, "Crazy Girl" and the intro "Facemelt" are the album's triumphs. "Crazy Girl" is perfectly tailored with a build up and peak that doesn't blow out your speakers, but still has a very clubby vibe that makes it irresistible. "Young, Single and Sexy" is  also a stand-out track, but is too consistent with the R&B breakup fad that Beyoncé and Rihanna helped popularize half a decade ago with "Irreplaceable" and "Take A Bow."

Bottom Line: For the amount of hype behind her, this has to be one of the most tragically mishandled albums of the year. Especially from a new artist.

  2. What a trash review. Let Remon run the site.

  3. All this site is anymore is a Britney fan site. "If its not Britney, its not good! :D "

  4. Femme Fatale had one of the least favorable reviews last year, just FYI. This album is trash. People call me biased all the time, but in actuality, they let their stanning habits cloud their judgement. It's a shitty album. End of story. 90% of my mentions on Twitter agree.

  5. This is a completely biased review. This album is the UK version of the album, correct? And with that being said it targets that audience and had great songs that could be great hits. This is a debut album for a artist where three of the songs are #1 hits before the album comes out but you say it's just generic trash? MartianLeaks is just losing it's reputation and it's clout before it can even get big again. Let Remon do the reviews and well pretty much everything here because he's the only one with some sense.

    1. LOL, but Remon doesn't write reviews. I don't even think he ever has. Plus, the blog has consistently grown every month so I don't know what you're clawing at. The US version of the album could potentially have 2 different tracks at this point. We always do reviews for both, if necessary. We review UK albums all the time, so this is no different.

  6. I agree with this review, the album wasn't as good as I was hoping it would be, I'm dissapointed that they chose to put a clean and shortened version of Facemelt on the album and make it an introduction, I was so looking forward to hearing the final version.

I was hoping she'd take some risks, but this album's a bit too safe.

  7. Femme Fatale is HAWT. ):

ORA is ok for me. I wasn't excited about it AT ALL so I ain't disappointed. Hello Hi Goodbye, Roc The Life, Crazy Girl, Facemelt and Fall In Love are really good. Uneasy is cute too.

  8. I see no lies in this review.

  9. There no lies at all in this review. We shouldn't forget that Rita Ora is just a product. Her personality was built up before she pulled put every single.

    BTW, Martian rocks.

  10. The biggest mess up of the album is inconsistency. The tracks all give different vibes and genres so it makes it hard to follow the album and like it all through bc it doesn't flow well. The songs aren't terrible I think that's a little much the album isn't the biggest disgrace is the industry how you made it seem. It's just not what everyone expected and it's not consistent. I still think its okay though. It's passable to me.

  12. This is a good debut though, sure it has some bad tracks but then again it's just her debut !
I remember Rihanna's debut, now that was a bad album.
Same for Cheryl Cole and so many others.
You can't expect her to make a 'Good Girl Gone Bad' type of record just because she worked with really good people.
I think Rita did a good job and I'm sure she'll evolve with the next record.

    1. Exactly people are acting like this is Britney Spears releasing a album or something. This is a very good debut album.

  13. This album blows. The singles "Hot Right Now" and "R.I.P", along with the deluxe bonus track "Meet Ya" are the only bloody good thing on this crap. Most generic album ever.

  14. There's other albums, including pop ones, that released this week and got no mention on the blog.

Those other albums are far more worthy of attention, yet they haven't even seen a mention.

  15. I have to agree. I really dig Rita and was so ampt to hear the album and when I did, I wasnt blown away like I thought I would. She's a great singer and can do really well but I do think this album was not put together well. I still love her and hope she does do well and makes better albums.
