Turns out my VMA predictions post was right on time yesterday, though I didn't really talk much about nominations!
This year, MTV actually shocked the world by releasing a really well-rounded list of nominees. I will point out that there were some obvious oversights, but it's better than making it completely obvious that they hand out nominations to any artist they want to come to the show.
Here's the full list with a little annotations. Check below for some snubs, shocks and surprises!
The full List of 2012 MTV Video Music Awards Nominees:

That's Rihanna and Drake in the lead with 5,
I'm quite pleased with this list!
I feel like Lana Del Rey was snubbed in several places. She's consistently put out stunning videos, especially for "National Anthem," which should have went up for Best Video and Best Pop Video. I would have liked to see Azealia Banks get one too, though I'm not shocked she was left out.
It was shocking to see MIA make such a large sweep in the nominations because I feel like MTV has ignored a lot of great videos with messages in the past. Rihanna also shocked by taking the most nominations. She is largely snubbed by the VMAs and since she did put out two great videos this year.
I was super surprised to see my homegirl Regina Spektor take home her first nomination! "All The Rowboats" is incredible. It's good to see less pop stars, more artists who coming up.
I'm also glad that MTV didn't allow people like Carly Rae Jepson, Gotye and Fun to completely sweep just because they had huge hits.
On Twitter a lot of Britney and Gaga fans seemed upset that "Marry the Night" and "Criminal" weren't nominated, but I'm glad they weren't. Neither one of those videos really stood out as amazing for those artist. "Criminal" was just really different for Britney, personally, but it still wasn't a video I watched over and over. "Marry The Night" was one of my favorite videos from that era, but I still feel like there have been more great videos that were less over the top.
I applaud MTV for featuring Frank Ocean, Lana Del Rey, Regina Spektor, etc in the nominations this year and not just beefing up the list so bigger name artist will show up.
Let me know you thoughts in the comments or on our Twitter page!

LANA DEL REY! I hope she gets it!!! she deserves it!
ReplyDeleteYUP YUP :)
DeleteYoü And I deserved at least 1 nomination imo
ReplyDeleteShe's not attending, and they knew that before the nominations. They want to save face. Besides, Music Industry HO number 1 RIHANNA is BOUND to get every award! :)
DeleteI agree with you nor Gaga nor Britney deserved a nomination. Im a Gaga fan but I think she've had better films. I think that We Found Love is an awful video so all my votes go to Katy Perry, Wide Awake it's fucking amazing
ReplyDeleteGaga's next record is going to have a FILM for every song! If you think BORN THIS WAY was overthetop and overhyped, you haven't seen how hard it's gonna get when she comes up from behind, on this next record. The hype will be after the release, and it'll be coming from the most unexpected place: the general public. That's the plan! :)
DeleteMadonna probably had the two best looking videos this year and she worked with directors who were cutting edge and did her justice. Ah well, MTV is a joke anyway. Go Katy perry!
ReplyDeleteHow the hell is Marry The Night not nominated? She could have easily have been nominated for the majority of those categories, not only is it autobiographical it was also directed by Lady Gaga herself.
ReplyDeleteBefore a stan war starts, I, a Lady Gaga fan/monster can honestly say that she need to be SNUBBED this year. She's made it CLEAR, if you've been listening, that she's not gonna pander to any kind of media/press, and she won't be attending an award show for a while. She's too busy finishing the next one (record) and improving her ongoing Ball. Besides, the DECAY HAS BEGUN. Just watch... :)
DeleteThat is your opinion, whether I call myself a Little monster or not, I thoroughly respect this woman for all she stands for which is irrelevant to this conversation however, what is relevant is that both You & I and Marry The Night are incredibly artistic with very clear and beautiful messages and both should have been nominated in my opinion as they're great music videos.
DeleteAnd yes I have been paying attention and I know she is on a media blackout, but that doesn't mean the press are going to ignore her, the press are still going to create stories about her no matter whether she's on a black out or not. Even if she's not going to attend the awards show, it doesn't mean that she cannot be nominated.
And I know she's currently finishing up the follow-up to Born This Way, and I have access to YouTube which lets me watch the performances from the shows, and I can see with every show she gets better. I understand that the next era for Gaga is going to be massive and I've noticed she's already dropping hints on the symbolism for the next era and album, and some people are saying this will be the make or break era for her as some people say Born This Way flopped however I feel she's just getting started.
I hope you realise that saying "THE DECAY HAS BEGUN" and regurgitating facts does not make you an insider.
I'm not an insider. LOL
DeleteThere are many times that VMA nominees/winners haven't been able to attend the show but they still were acknowledged. I feel Marry the Night deserves at least one nomination.
DeleteI'm a huge Britney stan, so I'm disappointed to not see her on the lineup but honestly she needs to put better material out there to be considered.
ReplyDeleteThis lineup is great, it really is. I haven't been this excited for the actual awards being handed out in a long time. I agree that Lana deserved a few more noms though. Glad to see M.I.A. getting credit for the Bad Girls video, she really deserved it.
Can't wait to see the show!
it's sad but true that mtv finally having a category for edm really validates the genre in a mainstream sense.
ReplyDeletei think it will be around for a while.
like most things, musical fads are cyclical; house was huge in the 80's to early 90's then just became regional then dance music (e.g.: ace of bass, amber, venga boys, etc.) was big in the mid to late 90's and now edm has gone mainstream and will probably stick around for at least the next decade, since so many new sub-genres are stemming from it (e.g.: "futurepop, hip-house"), before it wanes in popularity again.
