Adele went Kill Bill on the industry this year. If it wasn't one record, it was another. Each of her singles reach audience impressions updates of at least +3.000 on mediabase. Her album was #1 for over 14 weeks and stayed in the top ten for the better part of the year. I mean, this era for her was just epic. Something we haven't seen since the early 2000s.
We debated for weeks about who was going to be the artist of the year. Britney, Gaga and Beyonce, of course, came up... but it seemed to typical and really, none of them did anything that we hadn't seen them do before. (Well, except Gaga's huge first week, but it was outweighed by it's even bigger decline the second week.) When it came down to it, it was Rihanna's on-going commercial success from Loud vs Nicki Minaj's final big boom onto the scene vs Adele's huge US/UK takeover.
The reason we went with Adele is simple. No one expected it. Sure, 19 was big, but in my opinion, her success was shared and outdone by the likes of Amy Winehouse and Duffy. With 21, she completely revolutionized the game for the raspy British soul singers.
On top of that, Adele was heavily praised by all of the mentioned above. Britney and Beyonce both mentioned Adele when speaking of their most listened to artists of the year. Lady Gaga disciplined her Monsters on her behalf when they attacked her and Nicki Minaj and Rihanna have both had nice things to say in interviews.
Congratulations, Adele, on your huge year. We wish you much success in 2012 and any future albums!
