Demi is starting this era off on the right foot! She's not completely slutting up like I expect gal pal Selena Gomez to in her next era, but she's grabbing at a more pop-rock sound, which fits her vocals so much better than bubblegum ever could. Of course, the majority of the song is infested with a perfect-for-radio electro vibe.
Lyrically, the song is a cute look inside the mind of a once-burned young woman suffering from a serious case of philophobia. "So I'm putting my defenses up cause I don't want to fall in love. If I ever did that I think I'd have a heart attack." She's playing the vulnerable but total hard-to-get bitch role.
Vocally Lovato really shines, keep her golden pipes front and center. At first I thought all of the Christina Aguilera-style screaming would be annoying, but rapid beat and loud string section really balances Lovato out. It's really an outstanding production.
The song took off on iTunes, making it to #1 in the US in less than 15 hours. It's expected to hit radio next week and I do see it taking off. I just don't think it can hold on to its momentum for very long.
Next week? I work for Clear Channel and it has been added into nationwide rotation for all of the Top 40 stations today.
ReplyDeleteI think there are moments where there's a lot going on , but is a well paced song and the chorus is amazing
