Nelly Furtado Talks Flopping & Career Inconsistencies

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

Not being able to sell an album doesn't say much about your popularity in these digital days. It's when you can fill up a 2,000-seat venue that you should worry. Still, Nelly Furtado does not seem phased by her ill-received post-Loose comeback.

Check out Nelly's interview below.

So why is it that some of her pop colleagues (with the same or fewer hits) — such as Lady Gaga or LMFAO or Pitbull — can pack Rexall Place, but Furtado can now barely fill a venue of 2,000 fans? Did the six-year break between Loose and The Spirit Indestructible hurt her? Most likely.

“I think that’s the price I’ve had to pay for being inconsistent in my touring schedule,” she said during a phone interview in December, weeks before the start of her 2013 tour.

“I think you have to dedicate your life (to touring to attract large crowds) and I think I’ve had other priorities, I guess you could say.

“Not that I don’t enjoy touring — when I’m out there onstage, I’m giving it my all. But in the scope of my life and my career, I’ve put my attention to other areas. I mean, maybe I could’ve toured more, but instead I was starting my own label, putting out my Spanish record, working with charities. My life has changed. I really value living.”
