R&B act Ne-Yo is under fire today after poorly phrasing his words. When asked by the Daily Star “Who was the last real icon to come out of the music industry?” -- Ne-Yo responded:
“Everybody thought it was going to be Lady GaGa, but where is she right now, what’s going on with her? Not to take anything away from her because she’s ridiculously talented, but artists who stand the test of time – you just don’t see those any more.”
Now listen, everyone is Little Monsters are up and arms because of Ne-Yo's ignorance - and that's understandable. But I hope that you understand what he was TRYING to say. In fact, if you strip the entire Lady GaGa sentence from his quote, he actually has a point. This is a typical case of not phrasing your sentences correctly, not to mention name dropping a current artist was completely unnecessary. It's almost as if he went out of his way to say something about Lady GaGa because he answered a completely different question than what was asked.
Now let's rewind and see how Ne-Yo SHOULD have answered the question:
Well, the last real icon to come out of the music industry in MY MIND is still the late, great Michael Jackson. His work and influence on everyone will transcend time. I still don't believe anyone will ever reach his level of fame and acclimation. The music industry has changed so much that we probably won't see another icon like him ever again.
Maybe smacking on some extra lip gloss would keep those lips of his shut to prevent any future situations like this.
