Was Glee's 'Britney 2.0' Too Much?

Saturday, September 22, 2012

In case you manage to have a life worth living and missed the Britney Spears tribute on Glee, you didn't get to see the incredibly nostalgic, post K-Fed breakdown reenactment that mad even Britney haters uncomfortable.

The episode was filled with insinuations that the ditzy Brittany was on a horrid downward spiral in classic Blackout fashion. They didn't hold back at all, having Britney nearly shave her head, give the first ever lip synced performance on the show, much on Cheetos and Starbucks and gain a little pudge. They even went on to poke fun at Britney's awkward 2007 VMA performance.

It was  basically a shade-fest... but was it too much? In all honesty, even though they did kind of exaggerate the stories, nothing Britney related was absolute fiction. The creator of the show took the time out to talk about the episode, but completely ignored the criticisms.

On doing a second Britney Spears tribute: "No, that was my idea. They never asked me at all. The first episode, we had Britney's cooperation and she was in it and had approvals and I never wanted to do that again. I thought it would be interesting to do another tribute to her simply because it was a big hit for us but to do it in a different way. I like doing tributes the way we do in this episode; what's more important are following the characters' stories or doing another fantasy number or some of that razzmatazz stuff. I suggested it and network liked it because of the Britney tie-in but it was a different way of doing it. I don't know if she's seen the episode and I really admire her. I hope she would like it but it was meant to be another type of love letter to her. What Brittany says about her at the end is that Britney Spears' career is about resiliency and that's what we say."

So what are your thoughts? Over-the-top or just awkward?

  1. It WAS awkward :/ I know people won't forget Britney's past but there was no need to bring it all up again.... just when the general public are seeing her ina good light on X Factor, it was like the episode wanted to bring her down again, e.g. "Despite her succeeding and being currently stable, lets not forget about her breakdown". I thought it was really shady, but that might be because I'm a big Britney fan....

  2. yea, it was awkward, i've only seen two episodes of glee ever, this one and the ACTUAL britney tribute.
    and that's the last.
the whole time i was watching i was like uhhhh? didn't we move on?

PS the part about britney and her resiliency was only like less than a minute long, one sentence, and if you blinked you missed it

  3. I ADORE THE EPISODE, ignorant people will think that this was a Britney shade, but it's actually the other way. In every Glee tribute the cast is inspired by the fame and success of the artist, but in this tribute Britney is inspired by the decay of Britney, because it was in that dark moment where she got stronger than ever before and cameback better than before.
