The 2012 VMAs A Certified Flop

Saturday, September 8, 2012

Remember when the VMAs where good? Remember when artist got on stage and danced?... and no I don't mean shuffling your feet and patting your lady parts. Remember stage set-ups were elaborate, but artist still managed to keep the focus of the performance? Remember controversy?

How did MTV manage to forget all of these things? Were they really banking on Taylor Swift and One Direction being the hype factor of the show? Did they really think Rihanna was going to give an iconic performance that would make headlines the next day? Although the line-up of the show was impressive, there were ZERO PERFORMERS at this years show. Even Katy Perry or Ke$ha would have been a positive step up from seeing Taylor Swift strut around stage like a prissy Toddler in Tiara doing middle school cheer choreography. That goes right along with P!nk's recycled acrobatics and that awkward 30 seconds of Nicki Minaj looking depressed to have to share a stage with Alicia Off-Keys, who managed to miss 60% of her notes.

MTV has seriously lost touch with music. It's nice that they always manage to redefine pop culture, but I'm glad I'm not a part of the generation that would rather watch Jersey Shore than music videos. MTV was hoping to ride on the backs of big names in music, tv, movies and sports, but completely ignored some of the biggest names in performing. If I was working on talent for the VMAs, I'd be reaching out to the artist who are going to help take the show to the next level, and not just walk around the stage and look pretty.

...but alas, MTV dropped the ball and their rating followed suit, plummeting to a dismal 6.1 million. That's less than half of the viewers brought in last year courtesy of Beyoncé's baby bump, Gaga's prosthetic penis and Britney's big tribute, which brought in 12.4 million viewers.

Shame on you, MTV, for  this fly-by-night award show. Even the BET Awards were better than this and look at the state of that.

Oh, and don't get me started on how they just seem to hand out awards to whoever is there...

  4. the MTV channel needs new management. SERIOUSLY.

the 2013 should include performances by TRUE performers and singers:

    1. BRITNEY SPEARS
    2. Lady Gaga
    3. Xtina
    4. Beyonce
    5. Chris Brown
    6. Lana Del Rey
    7. Eminiem
    8. insert the new tween sensation here

that would make for one UNFORGETTABLE VMAs.

and they need to bring back music videos and stop with this reality sh*t.

  6. and once again i'm left wondering how a video that wins video of the year doesn't automatically win in all of it's other categories.
by what logic does the video of the year, which, by it's title, one would presume is the video with the biggest impact/most popularity, not win in the other categories it's nominated in...?!
    am i fucking missing something...?!

first mtv pulls this shit with "single ladies" and again with "we found love."
    fuck mtv!

  8. Ok I thought for a moment that I was watching the Teen Choice Awards, because everyone was winning a fucking moonman. Next year I want Gaga, Xtina, Beyonce, Kesha, Katy Perry and the good Nicki Minaj. I knew something was wrong when they invited the girls from the Olympics, usually we heard "in 5 minutes Florence & The Machines" or "Usher" or "Chris Brown" or "Lady Gaga", this year "in 5 minutes THE FEAR 5" OMG!! THAT'S SO STUPID like really why the fuck do they invite those girls, I kind of get that they invited the gangnam style dude
