No More Singles For Katy Perry

Monday, July 23, 2012

There was a disappointing rumor that Katy Perry would release "Hummingbird Heartbeat" featuring T.I. as the final single from her Teenage Dream era, which will followed with a very convincing, fan-written press release.

Capitol Records & Katy Perry to end the era with T.I.-assisted “Hummingbird Heartbeat”

As Katy’s latest single, “Wide Awake,” is currently on track to reach the Hot 100 summit soon (bulleting at No. 3 with gains in airplay and OnDemand streams), Capitol Records has officially announced that the “Dream” will finally come to an end with “Hummingbird Heartbeat.”

“We are ready to finally end the ‘Teenage Dream’ era for Katy and wrap it up with one last single,” Capitol’s Greg Thompson announced in a press release. It plans to solicit the rock-driven “Heartbeat” to contemporary hit, adult pop, and rhythmic radios in mid-September.

When asked if this was an attempt to break Michael Jackson’s “Bad” record for Hot 100 No. 1’s, Thompson replied,

“It would be an honor to have Katy’s name stand alone in the Billboard record books, but our focus is mainly to increase album and single sales for ‘Dream’ leading into the busiest musical shopping time of the year.”

Should “Heartbeat” reach No. 1 on the Hot 100, Perry will become the first artist in Billboard history to generate six chart toppers from an album.

To further the song’s potential popularity, Christopher “Tricky” Stewart has been working on a remixed version of the production of the song to include additional lyrics from T.I. to be serviced to retail simultaneously with radio. His new single, “Go Get It,” is expected to debut on the Hot 100 later this week.

“Heartbeat,” officially, would be the seventh single from the parent “Teenage Dream” album and the ninth overall single from the “Dream” era, following the top-5 hits California Gurls (featuring Snoop Dogg), the title cut, Firework, E.T. (featuring Kanye West), Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.), The One That Got Away, Part of Me, and Wide Awake, where the latter two are featured on Perry re-release “The Complete Confection.”

Thealbum track has already received gains at retail since the release of her concert-documentary, “Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D,” as it features a performance of “Heartbeat.”

...but don't believe the hype. Katy's official street team manager confirmed that "Wide Awake" ends the era for Katy. Plus, hello... Katy has said a zillion times that she wanted a break.

Still, I wish she'd release "Circle the Drain." That's my shit.

  1. I don't think that song is strong enough to get a #1. But then again, I thought Part of Me was weak and it went straight to #1.

Speaking of which, why wasn't Part of Me or Wide Awake allowed to count towards the records? If anything, her album was a proper re-release with only 3 new tracks. It's not like it was Gaga or Kesha's way of adding an album's worth of material to an old one.

    1. yea, when capital first announced the re-release they mentioned that any singles from the complete confection wouldn't count towards that record because of billboards rules regarding album re-releases.

  3. Hummingbird might end in the top 5 but Circle The Drain would enter the charts for just a week or something like that, because though the verses are amazing the chorus is dull. I feel like Pearl would have been an amazing single, because I imagine the video like she was a queen and her king wanted more power so he trapped her inside a pearl. I think that song is so beautiful

  5. I think "the story's over now, the end" was a pretty good indication that the era was over.
