My brain started bleeding last week when I tried to come up with a list of Beyoncé's best non-singles like I did with Rihanna, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and coming soon Lady Gaga. Then I realized it was because she releases like 85 singles per album. So I changed it up a little bit for the Queen Bey. Instead, I want to focus on what Beyoncé does best, and no I'm not talking about pussy popping women anthems. I'm thinking more along the lines of love songs. People get so caught up in the screaming antics and vocal acrobatics in songs like "Single Ladies," "Run the World (Girls)" and "Ring The Alarm," we forget that Beyoncé's strong suit is the ability to make us feel her love songs in the deepest depths of our souls.
Here's my personal Top 10 Greatest Love Songs by Beyoncé
10. "Sweet Dreams"
Bet you weren't expecting this to be first? I said love songs, not slow-tempo'd power ballads, though those will definitely be included. I love this song because it reminds me so much of 90s dance music. It's more than just a love song or a "sweet dream," it's also about being dangerously obsessed with this love which could potentially be a "nightmare." Still, you clutch onto the hopes of the perfect future and choose to ignore the possibilities of negativity. Note that she questions the love many times during the song.
9. "Crazy In Love"
I can hear the Bey fans bitching and buzzing about this now. "Why is it so high up and not in the top 3?" Because the other songs are better and you will deal, that's why.
But seriously, this song is just classic Bey and a very cute anthem for us all to remember what it's like to be in the honeymoon phase of a relationship.
8. "Rather Die Young"
The fact that she opens this song, "Boy you'll be the death of me," says so much about how deep in love she is. Beyoncé continues to play on the whole Dangerously In Love theme almost a decade later as she begs, at the top of her lungs, to not only live but for the relationship to last forever.
7. "Gift From Virgo"
For this song to be so short, it says so much. It's actually one of my favorite Beyoncé songs because she really captures what it's like to be unable to express how much you love someone, especially when they're not with you at that moment.
6. "1+1"
This song sounds so desperate to me, and I mean that in the best way possible. You can hurt and long and feign for love and that's what this is all about. Fighting for that eternity together. A part of what makes this song so amazing is the raw power in the final track. You can feel her singing that song. It makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up... and you should shave that off, that's unattractive.
5. "Deja Vu"
This is just altogether the most underrated uptempo Beyoncé song. It's like Crazy In Love on steroids and with a much better vocal delivery.
4. "That's Why You're Beautiful"
I love the way she moans in the end of this song. They're not even words, but they say so much. This is one of the best examples of Beyoncé really oozing love on a track and really leaving all of the emotion in the studio. There have been nights when I laid in bed and shed tears listening to this song, just because it's such a beautiful track.
3. "Halo"
Any questions?
2. "Speechless"
Not only is this song beautiful, it's sexy as hell. Most R&B songs these days are about fucking and tearing the walls down... in your apartment, but this song is about making love that will leave you just as satisfied. Sex is so much better when you're in love and still have that fiery passion. I'm so glad this track wasn't cut from the original album and even made an appearance on The Beyoncé Experience Tour.
1. "Flaws & All"
I mean seriously, unless you are perfect or not a human being, you have to love and be able to relate this song. Just read the words. If you've never been in love, then this will help you understand how it feels when you're treated right.
"I'm a peasant by some standards, but in your eyes I'm a queen."
"I'm a host of imperfections and you see past all that."
"All the pictures aren't even in the box and yet you see the picture clear as day."
Fairly simple, right? What are your favorite Beyoncé love songs? Of course, surely you'll have some that I left off the list. I'm mostly expecting to hear about "Smash Into You" and "End of Time."
ummm...DANGEROUSLY INLOVE?!?!? i thought that would be #1.
ReplyDeleteI still count that as a Destiny's Child song. I don't care if it was re purposed for her solo career.
ReplyDeletebroken hearted girl.
ReplyDeleteSmash into you, Poison
ReplyDeletetotally agree with Speechless
ReplyDeleteHello is also amazing, the diamond key lyric <3
ReplyDeleteOh! I totally forgot about Hello! It's such a great song.
Delete1+1 should be the number one spot!
ReplyDeleteand If should be in there somewhere
I definitely would have added Dance For You. The lyrics alone shows Beyonce being completely vulnerable and pleasing her man in the most tasteful way. To appreciate his love & everything he does for you.
ReplyDeleteFlaws & All definitely deserves it's spot at number one.
You forgot Roc as well. Beysus killed that track. >>>>>>>>>>>
Settle 4 U, Summertime, Body Rock
And HOW in the HELL could you make a list and NOT put Be With You on there. Like huhhhhhhhhh that's a Beyonce CLASSIC.
I must say Beysus slayed Trust In Me & I'd Rather Go Blind....
I omitted soundtrack songs because they aren't originals.
DeleteI like all of the songs listed, but not more than the ones I put. I haven't even heard Settle4 U.
Hello is one of my favorite's. "And never will I ever let my hustle come between me and my family time" Those lyrics make me tear up every time.
ReplyDeleteThis is difficult because "4" was essentially love song after love song devoted to Jay-Z. That being said, "Dance For You" is on more than one romantic/love making playlists of mine.
I completely agree with "Sweet Dreams" making the top ten, despite thinking it should be higher on the list. When she preformed that song as a ballad, I cried hysterically. I connect particularly with the lyrics "tattoo your name across my heart so it will remain so not even death can make us part" -- makes me think of how I feel for my girlfriend.
cool list; I love Live From Mars rants!
Awesome! I really hope that I remember to participate in this-it is a great idea!
