Album of the Week: 'Loose' by Nelly Furtado

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

I've been racking my brain for the past couple of days trying to figure out what album I wanted to push for AOTW. "No Hay Igual" came on my Last.FM Radio and it was pretty much a sealed deal.

When I think about amazing summer albums, this immediately comes to mind. there are just so many fun songs that is really representative of being young and wasting time on the things you're supposed to at that age, like boys and heartbreak or being a completely and total slut.

What really works for this album is the perfect timing. This is exactly what radio was really eating up back in 06 just before the dance craze impacted a year or more later. Nelly whipped up an attitude a la Gwen Stefani and recorded some bombastically pop music. It's timeless. You can listen to this album now, 6 years later, and still jam to it.

You can tell that when Nelly hit the studio she had a vicious appetite to storm charts around the world. She had "Promiscuous Girl" that top Billboard's Hot 100 chart, and "Maneater" which charts loved all across Europe and Latin America. She also sealed a second #1 single in the US with "Say It Right," one of my all-time favorite pop songs.

It wasn't just about chart success though. Unlike a lot of #1 albums and singles, the quality was consistent throughout the majority album. Aside from a couple of filler tracks, the album was addictive. Songs you may not have liked when the album first came out, you liked a year later while Loose was still surfing around Billboard's Album 200 chart.

This album was produced heavily by Danja and supervised by Timbaland. Danja also produced my all-time favorite pop album; Blackout.

Top Songs:
"Say It Right," which I believe is a song that no other pop artist could record and make it work.

"Maneater", a song that really brings the Hall & Oates coined term to the 21st.

"No Hay Igual," evokes her inner badass. Google translate the lyrics.

"Te Busque," the albums most lightweight ballad that showcases that chops that any fan of Whoa Nelly was expecting.

"Let My Hair Down." Something this song slithering through your ear really makes you want to belly dance and pop your hips like Shakira.

"Promiscuous Girl," another song that is uniquely Nelly, but I imagine that Timbaland helped bring out some commercial appeal to make this song a smash.

"Do It," is bubblegum all the way. The trashy kind that we love.

If you've never heard this album, shame on you.

  1. this album defined my summer before I started college. it reminds me of being young, having fun, and hot summer days. "Say It Right" cannot be matched and is a uniquely haunting pop song! Very perfect timing since she is releasing her new single "Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)" next week! Her new album "The Spirit Indestructible" hits stores in June [almost exactly 6 years since the release of 'Loose'] ... perhaps Nelly has another hot summer album for us?? Love your blog! you rock!
