Alright, enough is enough. I'm getting tired of having songs shoved down my throat because of radio deals.
Radio has become a wasteland for unwanted pop songs to be repeated once, twice or even more times during an hour because labels are making these "special deals" with radio stations. Unfortunately, because of the nature or the deals made and the contracts involved, they are not seen as payola and are perfectly legal.
However, these radio deals do greatly influence airplay and have helped artists like Katy Perry & Rihanna break countless records. It seems like Billboard has a new record every month.
When will it stop? It seems as though we've come to a point were people are rejecting the acceptance of the singles we don't like. Rihanna's "You Da One" broke airplay records... then when into a rolling period and never recovered. People didn't respond to the song and it was gone. Same thing is currently happening to Madonna. Once the radio deal ended, she lost pretty much every audience impression she had.
I think Billboard should filter out the unfair radio deals because when people look back on history, the songs that were given an unfair advantage with be what is remember, and the songs that people truly loved may be left out.
Songs like Selena Gomez's "Love You Like A Love Song" will never be remembered outside of her fanbase, but it is currently the longest charting single on Billboard. It has risen on mediabase time and time again, only to be pushed back by an artist who have made radio deals and blocked her from getting airplay.
Meanwhile, Katy Perry's latest song, "Part of Me" was played on z100 eight times before morning was over. Assuming they started playing the song around 9 am, that's over 3 times an hour. Every extra time that song is played, a song that fans have gone out and voted for is knocked out of that hour's rotation, potentially.
I've written to Billboard twice about whether or not they will ever filter out these radio deals. The first time, I got no response. The second time I got a long message detailing why payola was banned which could have all have been summed up with a "not really."
What do you guys think? Are the radio deals harmless? Do we need to filter them out?
Just seems like you're mad that Britney can't get a number one to save her life so you accuse everyone else of cheating. Hail Kelly.
ReplyDeleteYessssssss @MartianLeaks response right above me , haha
ReplyDeleteI agree i think radios should let music speak for itself if is gonna be a hit is going to be if is not dont push it
ReplyDeletelmao yes @martianleaks great answer serve them baby
ReplyDeleteWell i personally think that it's just a marketing strategy on how these artists distribute their songs on radio. And artists such Katy Perry and Rihanna clearly know how to play this game. But as you said earlier, if people don't respond to the song such as "You Da One", in rolling period the song is going to lose its audience. So it's pretty much harmless.
