Best New Artist of 2011 - Nicola Roberts

#TeamGinge

In 2011 we saw new albums from a lot of our favorite artists. Beyoncè gave us her most artistic LP in years, Lady Gaga gave us a theatrically eclectic album full of feel-good songs, Britney made us dance harder than ever, Jay-Z & Kanye West took hip-hop to a new level, Rihanna gave us hit after hit and Adele took the world by storm. Still, no artist impressed us more than Nicola Roberts. Formerly of Girl's Aloud, Nicola Roberts gave us an album that no one quite expected from the quiet mouse of the massively popular UK girl band, all-while making us fall in love with her bitchy personality and kitschy-fresh hipster fashions.

Nicola Roberts' album, Cinderella's Eyes, bowed at #3 on the Top 20 Albums of 2011 list, if that's any indication of how much we loved it! The infatuation started with the video for "Beat of My Drum," a song I've played hundreds of times since the summer. In the videos, Roberts plays the opposite role of a Girls Aloud band mate. There's one moment in particular when Nicola knocks down the microphone stand and starts popping her ass that was dizzying... then she turns back to look back at it! How Sasha Fierce of you!

Nicola's video presence is powerful. Everything from her loud fashions to her whipping hair flips is just enough to completely overload anyone's senses and send them into fits of screaming excitement. Still, we prefer Nicola live. There's something about the gritty way she sings through her teeth that makes her performances more aggressive and emotional.

Did you catch the lyrics in that video? It's easily the most powerful song since Alanis Morisette's, "Ironic" or "You Learn."

"I hate that bad boyfriends wear some beautiful disguises!"
"Don't think it's healthy holdin' grudges that won't save the world."
"I'm scared to think about the devil, in case he takes my soul."
"I'm scared to wake up one day and find that my bubble has burst."
"I don't like the people that leave comments on the internet! They preach they're 'perfect' while they're fucking you with intellect."

She's an artist who's unafraid of the music industry, unafraid of negativity and unafraid to be whoever the fuck she wants to be... and that's hella awesome! We're definitely #TEAMGINGE and can't wait for her second album!

  1. She is so amazing. This album is just perfect. And i hope she gets big and comes to America she is obviously the most talented out of all the girls of Girls Aloud.
