Nicki Minaj Deletes Twitter/Chaos In Barbie World

Sunday, April 15, 2012

Nicki Minaj just made the biggest marketing mistake of her career and deleted her Twitter. The social page that connected Minaj instantly to over 10,000,000 fans across the globe now takes you to a blue error page.

While most of Twitter is relieved that they don't have to see her hundreds of daily fan retweets, I'm a bit stunned that Minaj would go to such dramatic lengths to show the world that she's pissed.

I didn't really think it was that big of a deal, but the world took note and her fan base seems to be quite upset, sending two anti-Minaj hashtags to the #1 position on Twitter's trending topic list. #NickiDontComeBack & #WeLoveLilKim.

So here's how shit went down.

A year ago, Nicki Minaj was shocked to find the webmaster of her biggest fansite handing out free downloads to the "Till The World Ends" remix days before it's official release. Though they don't take blame for the original leak of the song (we take that honor, of course), they didn't put out the first links for the high quality version which had apparently been given to them by Minaj & her team. All is forgiven, everyone moved one, no big deal

Fast forward to a few weeks ago, NickiDaily posts the official album snippets from Roman Reloaded. Once again, Minaj & her team were nice enough to fork over one of the advanced copies of her work to the massive fansite for review. In return, NickiDaily jumped the gun and released long-form snippets of the album, against Minaj's wishes. Essentially, Nicki Minaj gave them a second chance and they shit on it and shoved it in her face.

You win some, you love some, right?

Well, losing was not on the agenda for Nicki as she almost immediately blocked the fansite's official Twitter, claiming that she couldn't get down with fans who illegally shared her music.

Shame on your NickiDaily. Slap on the wrist. You should have known better. Now you're punished.

It really should have ended there, but it didn't. Fast forward almost a month later and suddenly Minaj's account erupts into Twitter-suicide tweets.

"And that's exactly why I'm paying the Barbz dust right now. And deleting my Twitter. Smdh - don't cry for me Argentina." She quickly recanted the statement following with, "On 2nd thought I’ll just follow a new set of barbz. The ones I follow r very mean and ratchet.*side eyes them*."

There's no official word on what exactly resparked the drama between Minaj and her massive fanbase.

Fast forward one more day and Minaj tweets a final "Like seriously, its but so much a person can take. Good fucking bye." Then her Twitter was gone.

The same day, her biggest fansite NickiDaily had already closed their doors, leaving nothing on the homepage but a streaming lyric video to her song "Dear Old Nicki." (LMFAO, The FUCKING SHADE!)

So much going on. Yeah, I feel Nicki on the tip that it's hard to trust people in the industry, especially bloggers and fansites (lord, don't get me started on the beef between Britney's management and Breatheheavy.com) but one thing you should never do is alienate fans, no matter how upset you are.

Your fans make you. Without them, you're nothing. Blocking one fansite on Twitter is one thing, but punishing them by disconnecting yourself from your current largest promotion tool and way of connecting with the rest of your fans is just foolish and somewhat arrogant.

Nicki isn't the first to delete her Twitter, of course. Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus have both deleted more accounts and tweets than those crazy porn-spam bots.

What do you guys think? Is Nicki being a bit much? Should she have deleted the Twitter account? Are her actions justified? Got any info I missed? Let me know in the comments.

  1. She should have just blocked the twitter account and left it alone. The album is out. We all have heard it. It didn't leak until like what 4 days before it came out. 4 leaked THREE WEEKS early.

And it was completely dumb & immature to handle the situation the way she did

This is why I say Twitter is the best & worst thing to be have in the entertainment industry.

But if you can't take the shade.... just don't get on.

  2. The stuff with NickiDaily was just the tip of the iceberg tbh, Nicki deleting her twitter was MUCH deeper.
Nicki last Favorited tweet today read:
"nicki is tired of this, she constantly has people trying to tear her down on a daily basis. nobody will ever understand her pain."

    Her last tweet was:
"Like seriously, its but so much a person can take."

It's not about Daily or Team minaj, It EVERYTHING. She gets SOO much hate, judgement & bullshit & she just reached a breaking point. She acts like it doesn't get to her but clearly it does & honestly that's understandable. Her deleting her twitter is what she needed to do to get away and I can't be mad at that. I know I wouldn't last a week in her shoes and neither would most people. Shit hurts, she's human & she's breakable...and I think she's kinda broken right now :(

    1. but do you think it was necessary to delete her Twitter? It's an idiot marketing move. She could have just stopped Tweeting for a little while.

    2. I don't know. It is a bad marketing move & she could have but just stopped tweeting but at the same time, not looking at your twitter is easier said than done. Also if your head space isn't right that's really bad for business too. She needs time & space to find some peace of mind. As far as the business side, Nicki's smart she'll figure it out, or she'll let this album pass and come back harder next album. However, right now I think she just needs a minute to breathe & rest, she hasn't taken a break since like 2009 & the amount of stress & BS from this last yr alone has been A LOT. Nicki is also never really gone, she'll probably hop on Facebook & other stuff. I'd prefer her to step back & focus on getting her mind together, as opposed to going through a Britney/Whitney/Lindsay type moment in the media just to sell the album.

    3. Everybody makes bad decisions in the heat of the moment, you can't blame her for getting tired of this bullshit.

    4. Nicki is not the only celeb who gets hated on, there are some who gets it worst then she does...she is extremely childish and immature to be almost 30 years old

  4. If you cant take the heat then get out of the kitchen. There are plenty of other stars on twitter who get a bigger bashing & lashings than Minaj does. Wah wah wah sounds like a cry baby to me who can't handle her shit. You can't take twitter seriously. The minute you do it's game over. She handled this one all wrong especially dissing your biggest fan base.

    1. Honestly there really aren't many. Nicki gets bashed for existing, it's ridiculous. The thing is it's not just twitter, it's everywhere. Saying she should just take it is ignorant. She's a human being & eventually consciously or subconsciously stuff is going to get to you. *Looks at Britney shaving her head, The Mariah Carey "Glitter" period, Whitney's crack era etc* It's up to you to keep your sanity & peace of mind & deleting her twitter is her way of doing that.

  5. i don't see why there is all the drama. Britney's "Femme Fatale" leaked ONE MONTH before it was supposed to be released.

  6. If You Ask Me Her Closing Her Twitter Will Generate SOME Album Sales. She Has 30 Days Before It Is Officially de-activated. And Trust & Believe She Will Be Back Before May 15th.

  7. Actually, they gave the webmaster the snippets he posted with an OK to post them. This is the truth because it was posted to Nicki's official sound cloud. Those were the official snippets that were issued by the label.

  8. After hearing this, I'm so glad Lady Gaga hasn't done anything like this to her fanbase: and there's some really nasty Monsters out there. Her love is unconditional it seems.

  9. I don't blame Miley Cyrus though. She had some crazed, christian fans calling her the Devil and condemning her to hell just because she expressed her own religious views.
